The Gouldian Finch Society (GFS) was originally conceptualised in 1992. Following a series of nationwide presentations, it became apparent just how popular the Gouldian Finch really was. Alas, there appeared to be a tremendous amount of misinformation out there as well (a situation that unfortunately still prevails amongst the uninformed today). These presentations attracted large audiences, sometimes topping 120 attendees, which made the establishment of a specialist club seem inevitable.

Following a period of intense preparations, legwork, and lobbying, which lasted almost two years, the GFS was finally founded on 22 October 1994 at the Boskruin Community Centre in Randburg, as the culmination of the vision and strong leadership provided by our founder and Honorary President, Craig Zimmerman.

The prime objectives of this Society are:

• To promote the interests of the Gouldian Finch as a species.
• The furthering of knowledge about the care and breeding of the Gouldian Finch in captivity.
• Understanding the various colour mutations (and the pitfalls involved in keeping and breeding them).
• The preservation of the ‘pure normal’ or wild-type bird.

We have active members from across our beautiful country, but also from beyond its borders. The combined birdkeeping experience within our midst could easily span several hundred years!

The GFS is renowned for its expertise in Gouldian Finch aviculture and the award-winning bloodlines of its top breeders.

Governance

The GFS is governed by a Committee of seven elected office bearers in accordance with our Constitution.
